Getting here, and what's nearby

The Mansion is on Basholu Road in Dharampur, in Tehsil Kasauli. It is not in Kasauli town itself but on a quieter hillside about half an hour short of it, two minutes' walk from the Kalka–Shimla toy-train line.

Address: Basholu Road, Dharampur, Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh 173209.

Getting here

By road, rail and air

Most guests drive up from Chandigarh on the Kalka–Shimla highway. The road is good and you can drive all the way to the entrance. We send exact directions once your booking is confirmed.

In the monsoon (roughly July to September), landslides sometimes close the highway for a few hours. If you are travelling then, call the house before you set off — we will tell you if the road is clear, and staff have guided guests out by another route before.

The Kalka–Shimla railway

The narrow-gauge line runs two minutes from the gate. It was built between 1898 and 1903, has 102 tunnels and more than 800 bridges, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Walking along the track as the little train comes round the bend is one of the simplest pleasures of staying here.

Kasauli town

A small cantonment town from the 1840s, with a Mall Road, old churches and pine-shaded lanes. Much of it is Army land, so some roads close to traffic and a few areas shut early in the evening.

The Gilbert Trail is a short walk of about a kilometre and a half along the hillside, near the Kasauli Club, and it ends at Sunset Point. Monkey Point, the highest spot in Kasauli with a small Hanuman temple, is inside an Air Force station: you will need a photo ID, and phones and cameras are usually left at the gate. Opening hours change, so ask locally before you go.

Further afield

Dagshai, a short drive away, is one of the oldest cantonments in the hills. Its stone jail, built in 1849, is now a museum — it held Irish soldiers of the 1920 Connaught Rangers mutiny.

Bhurshing Mahadev, a hilltop Shiva temple with the whole range laid out below, is about 1 hr by road. Shimla is about 2 hr by road, an easy day out.

Closer to home, there is a hike from the house to a hilltop viewpoint — about 40 min each way, from the house.
